Review: Unwind

Unwind Unwind by Neal Shusterman
My rating: 0 of 5 stars

I'm not going to rate this right now, because I read about a third of it, read a summary, and skipped to the end. It was very good, but I had to finish it quickly in time for the English festival. Also, I don't know that this is the best time for me to read it, as I'm pregnant and it was upsetting me a bit. The writing and story were excellent, I just didn't think that right now was a good time for me to read the whole thing.

Review: Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life

Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I'm wavering between a 3 and a 4 here. I guess I will go with a 3.5. I think that if I enjoyed writing creatively, this would definitely be at least a 4 stars. I love Anne Lamott's humor and honesty. I've read a couple of her other books and I always feel that way. However, I clearly was not the target audience here. I am not a writer. I can crank out a research paper or a letter of recommendation quickly, but I've never been able to write creatively. She had a lot of what were probably helpful ideas and insights. They just didn't apply to me at all. Still, I really enjoyed her anecdotes and her writing style. I'm sure I'll be reading more by her!

Review: The Port Chicago 50: Disaster, Mutiny, and the Fight for Civil Rights

The Port Chicago 50: Disaster, Mutiny, and the Fight for Civil Rights The Port Chicago 50: Disaster, Mutiny, and the Fight for Civil Rights by Steve Sheinkin
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A quick non-fiction read about a part of history I knew little about. It was very readable and fairly interesting. It just didn't grip me enough to give it a higher rating, but there wasn't anything wrong with it. I read it for the YSU English festival and I'm looking forward to meet the author!
