Review: Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family

Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family by Amy Ellis Nutt
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I read this in part to educate myself on the struggles transgender kids/teens and their families face daily and partly because I was just interested in hearing Nicole's story. It gave me a glimpse into Nicole's family and some of what I suspect many transgender kids deal with on a regular basis. I think it is generally probably a good one to pick up for the education piece as well because it does offer some facts and figures throughout, while always relating them to the things Nicole and her family are dealing with.

I need to do more research about other LGBT+ books I should read to further educate myself (I've read many anti-racist books at this point, but I need to focus on other topics as well). It was clearly lovingly written with much compassion for Nicole, her family, and everything they've gone through. It was also quite compelling. I actually stayed up late two nights in a row surprisingly because I was having trouble putting it down! That was unexpected honestly, but I was seriously drawn in to this very real story. Overall, I think this is a good one to read if you are just starting your journey into learning more about transgender issues or if you just want to read a good story about a family that has gone through some unique struggles. I'm looking for more suggestions for great LGBT+ nonfiction books (especially things similar to Uncomfortable Conversations With a Black Man or How to Be an Antiracist only with a focus on LGBT+), so if anyone reading this has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it! I definitely recommend this one.
